Hand It Over: Finding Freedom Through Consecrated Negligence
"Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." — 1 Peter 5:6–7 (NIV)
One of the most liberating concepts in my life has been embracing what I've called 'consecrated negligence.' It's about recognizing that I can't do everything and entrusting to God what I can't handle. Rather than trying to do everything below average, I focus on doing a few things well.
The 'saviour complex' can lead some to believe they're the only ones who can do what's needed. However, the reality is that when you can't do it, someone else often steps in. No person is an island, and working together allows for a more efficient distribution of tasks.
Jesus wisely said, "My yoke is easy, and my burden is light." He understood the importance of giving things over to Him, freeing us from frenetic busyness and tiredness.
Embracing 'consecrated negligence' means accepting we can't do everything and appreciating that often 'less is more'!
Reflection/Action:
What are you unduly anxious about? Determine to give it over to God. Ask Him to carry the anxiety and fears. Sometimes we misguidedly hang onto things, often out of a misplaced sense of duty! You're not the saviour! Jesus is! He invites us… 'come unto me and I will give you rest.' (Matthew 11:28–30).
